Comparison Study on the Attitude of the Mental Illness for Psychiatric and Non Psychiatric Nurses


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude of the graduate nurse toward mental illness and its changes during work in clinic.
This study also attempted to help develop an effective inservice educational program or a more desirable direction and to understand the attitude and perception of the nurses -toward the patients with abnormal behavior in psychic status.
The present study was carried out for the period from September 1 to September 30, 1979.
The tool used in this study was the Cohen¢¥s O.M.I Scale Containing 51 items.
The allotment of scores was made by the Likert type and the data collected was treated with computer upon arrangement based on the O.M.I. Scoring Table.
The result of this study were reviewed in a statistical method analysis of variance and t-test obtain the following findings.
1. The nurses covered by the study showed more positive on all opinions toward mental illness compared with those in the study of Kahn
2. The attitude of the authoritarianism in the psychiatric nurse group was showed higher than the non psychiatric nurse group. That means that the psychiatric nurse group showed more uneffective attitude in authoritarianism than the others
3. The opinions of interpersonal etiology in the psychiatric nurse group was seen higher than non psychiatric nurse group. This is to say that the psychiatric nurse acknowledged the interpersonal etiology of mental illness
4. According to the age, there were no significant differences in authoritarianism and social restrictiveness factors in two groups. The nurses who are older in two groups showed more positive attitude in authoritarianism and social restrictiveness factors than younger nurses.
5. The height of the Ievel of education in nursing education was seen a positive factor to all opinions (5 factors) in two groups. This is to say that the higher the height of the
